Viva la Hip Hop: Guilty Simpson

Picture from Guilty Simpson

I often listen to shout outs in songs. Especially if the song is by someone I think would have good taste. A while back I heard Black Thought give a shout out to Guilty Simpson on that song, "Love Movin." I thought, "Who is this Guilty Simpson dude. and is he any good?" I've been hearing more from him and so far I'm liking his lyrics.

Now here's my halfway serious / halfway sarcastic / halfway trying to be cute and shit but not really breakdown. (If I were cool and good at writing I wouldn't have to tell you that. Dang, why do I never make sense? What? huh? aaaaaaaaaah.)

"You can catch Guilty Simpson at a rave with babes. packin a .38 snub and a razor blade." - From "Baby"

By mentioning that you can catch him at a rave is a bold move for an underground hip hop artist, especially considering this song came out last year (tangent) and it shows that he is not afraid to elude to the fact that he may be into other things besides rap and hip hop. Then, mentioning that he'll be with a babe is just plain appealing and states something along the lines of, "maaaan, i'm pimp. what?" and if there are any other haters left, he proceeds with mentioning his .38 and a razor blade. straight. up. gangsta.

"Ain't no time to chase these broads. I'm tryin to get paper to create these jobs. and it's a fact when you're black that you don't know how to act when your belly button is touching your back." - From "Clap Your Hands"

Simpson is clearly focused and will not let broads distract him. He is also looking out for his people when he mentions creating these jobs. He usually always keeps his tough exterior, but he is showing a bit of his soft side here. He then sympathizes to those who are "hungry" by making a figurative statement about belly buttons touching backs. This dude is smart and compassionate.

"If she on the rag then I'm hittin all face. I'm pro fellatio." - From "Money Motivated Movements"

I feel this one speaks for itself.

"I don't write raps for free. If I did I won't make it, like Shaq from 3. My motto is simple. Without that loot your instrumental stay instrumentals. Blind man can see the kid's potential. Take notice so I grind and stay focused. If I was any hotter. I'd drink straight vodka, spit out flames, and piss lava. That hot fam. Try again. That's why I got hoes like firemen." - From "Jungle Love"

This is classic bragadocious rap. Some would say bragging too much is not good. and to those who say that, I say shut up (teehee. just kidding.) Personally, I take the humble route, but those bragadocious / cocky / confident dudes do tend to get the ladies. However, calling ladies hoes? yikes. I'm not into that. The noteworthy thing about these lyrics however, is that Simpson is asserting his place in the Hip Hop hierarchy. He states that beatmakers need to pay him to rap over their beats. He knows that he has rapped over beats by the best and is in the company of the best. and he is assertive about it. Now others need to take notice and realize that if he raps over their beat, he is giving them shine. It's business. (p.s. this hierarchy is an always evolving hierarchy measured by a number of factors and is often subjective. however, guilty has rapped over beats by the likes of Madlib, Dilla, and more.)

"Before I die I wanna have a wife and kids, to tell in detail of the life we lived." - From "Before I Die"

Simpson asserts many "Before I dies..." on this song and this one is just one of them. In the rest of the song he states that some of the things he's done is right and some of it is wrong. However, this lyric and the lyrics of this song show his ambition for immortalization. for his want to have his story live on. He is thinking way beyond the now and wants to leave a mark. I like that.

The above is by no means comprehensive.
