Yamamoto

You can thank Bugs for this one. She told me about Yamamoto and said, "If you tell anyone about Yamamoto I'll kill you... no serious. I'll kill you." I'm kind of scared as I write this, but that was a year ago and I could kind of go for some dying right now.

Yamamoto sounds kind of like dying. Instead, it's more like dying on a pillow of cotton candy inside of a giant bubble blown by Haley Joel Osment right after going into a toy store and blowing some bubbles on some instruments and some electronic stuff, kind of.

I can't really explain it, so below is some Yamamoto. They're from Mexico and they're on a label called Poni Republic. They released an EP called Columpio and if you do enough searching I'm sure you can find more of their music floating around on the net. Thanks Bugs.

Steamers has a nice lineup this weekend. Free on most nights with live Jazz acts every night, it's one nice spot. Even when not free, it's still a really good deal for what you get to see/hear. I got to see Francisco Aguabella and Poncho Sanchez there. And check this out... both of them will be playing there this weekend! Some info from Steamers....

Saturday, AUG 26, (8:30 p.m.)

Green Mania Under The Stairs

You probably already know that there's a TV network on the internet called Mania TV. It's sort of like a YouTube, except mashed-up with a television network.

But did you know Tom Green has a show on it? From what I've seen so far he doesn't seem as crazy as he used to be though. Maybe it was just the clip I saw. You can see a clip here.

So, you already knew that Tom Green has an internet TV show. But did you know that People Under The Stairs are going to be on the his show this Friday, August 25th? It starts at 8pm.

Ping Pong Pow...

The album release date has bounced from October 3rd to October 17th. Def Jam slated Public Warning for release on 10/12, then pushed it up to 10/3, and now moved it to 10/17. What the deal yo? I don't know. Well here's the tracklisting for Public Warning and lead single "Love Me Or Hate Me."

1. 9 to 5
2. Gatheration
3. Random
4. Public Warning (main)
5. Love Me Or Hate Me
6. My England
7. Tango (main)
8. A Little Bit Of Shhh

Slrang Yelkrab Mash-Up :Flip It & Reverse...

Noooo, not another "Crazy" cover!

No... no new crazy, remix, mash-up cover here. I promise. We were shuffling and a certain Nina Simone song came on. So instead of a new song, we went backwards... here's an old one. It's not exactly the same, but dang... the similarities.

Audio:
Nina Simone - Blackbird (mp3)
Gnarls Barkley - Crazy (mp3)

So why you wanna fly Blackbird you ain't ever gonna fly
You ain't got no one to hold you you ain't got no one to care
If you'd only understand dear nobody wants you anywhere
So why you wanna fly Blackbird you ain't ever gonna fly

Outkast...

They're sort of a big deal. So while I talk on and on like I was an old booty scratcher on the train with a Bible trying to talk to you about life and love and how to live your life and then try to sell you a CD player and things like that (hellooo, iPod you old geezer)... you can go ahead and skip down to the good stuff. Outkast has an album and a movie coming out. See the trailer & hear some songs below.

When I think of Outkast I look at them like one of those groups that can push Hip-Hop music beyond people saying, "This is real Hip-Hop" or "That is real Hip-Hop" and help people realize the many facets of Hip-Hop music instead of trying to pigeon-hole it into a one-dimensional load of poop and bling. Now don't get me wrong, the occsaional dose of bling is ok by me... and taking a poop is cool too (so relaxing). I'd just like to see more people (artists and fans) not be so inclined to say Hip-Hop is only this or Hip-Hop is only that. Hopefully in time, I think a group like Outkast can influence and aid in developing a larger open-minded Hip-Hop community and consumers... especially in the underground (since the staples in the underground scene seem to be creativity and originality) and eventually enable more underground Hip-Hop artists to actually make a living and EAT. Yeah it may seem like a stretch, but I think it's possible.

The underground Hip-Hop scene has been stigmatized with a stereotype as well. I've been guilty of this too... but when I think of underground Hip-Hop I think backpack, consciousness, preachy, do-gooder rap. Sometimes I get tired of that, the way I get tired of bling and dumb repetitive hooks. I guess I'm trying to say, a balance would be good.

In any case, there are a number of other factors involved in the growth as well. Some of them I think being the establishment of entities (whether they are business entities or not) which push that creative envelope and convey a certain quality (which I think is best explained from the example set by those like Stones Throw, Ubiquity, Turntablelab, Imageyenation, and PALMS OUT SOUNDS)... Or the expansion of society's perspective as a whole on Hip-Hop beyond bling OR preachy/consciousness... Or the formation of a lifestyle for the Hip-Hop fans who have gotten lost in the cracks over the years and have looked elsewhere to fill a void that Hip-Hop did not provide... Or the state of many Hip-Hop acts' live shows... and so on.

I think that's enough of my rambling for now. Here's the movie trailer for Outkast's upcoming film, Idlewild in theaters August 25th. Some audio of Idlewild Blue and Morris Brown from the Idlewild entitled album too. It's in stores August 22nd.

Morning Sickness...

I was reading some Notes from a Different Kitchen and happened to stumble upon this story from the New York Daily News....

Deejaying for dollars

July 20, 2006

Never mind those high-priced supermodels who demand $10,000 a day. Lowdown hears that Adam (DJ AM) Goldstein is making $160,000 for three nights' work at Southampton's Tavern nightclub this summer. The former fiancé of Nicole Richie does gigs that constitute one two- to three-hour set per booking. He still has one date left - on Aug. 12. Asked about AM's fee, his spokeswoman demurred, "We never talk about it." But Tavern's spokeswoman Stacey Wechsler told Lowdown: "He's worth every penny, but that number is a little overinflated. He is exclusive to Tavern for the summer. He definitely got paid well." Wechsler, who used to rep Goldstein, gushed: "He's not only an amazing deejay, he's an amazing guy. He's a sweetheart." For that kind of money, let's hope so.

And after reading that, I remembered it turns out that I just so happen to hate him....
What do you mean I'm just jealous? Who's jealous? Nobody's jealous.
I'm just kidding ok?... geez.

Bills...

Bills suck.
I was doing them but I got sidetracked.

[Fusicology] Platinum: Common & Gnarls

August is turning out to be a great month for quality urban music as Common’s “BE” album and Gnarls Barkley’s “St. Elsewhere” both go PLATINUM!

The first time ever, one of Common’s album’s goes Platinum and this will most definitely not be the last. With Kanye West as the Executive Producer on the album and the legendary late, J Dilla on the “BE Instrumentals” EP, two undoubtedly hottest producers in the game make this album heat! This past weekend, FUSICOLOGY was in Chicago attending the Global Mixx Summit which Common and Kanye co-chaired.

Last week, the RIAA has certified Gnarls Barkley’s, “St. Elsewhere” Platinum. The album hit 1,000,000 sales in the U.S. Gnarls management at Waxpolitation gives much love and appreciation to fellow Marketing/PR Companies, such as Echoing Soundz, Cornerstone, Giant Step, Fanscape, Music Today, Magnum PR, MySpace, and FUSICOLOGY!

DOUBLE PLATINUM CONGRATS to Common and Gnarls Barkley!

Teddybears Video

Here's a video. They got Mad Cobra on one of the songs. I didn't even know he was still around. He did that pop/dancehall song back in `92. And just as the homie Scheme said, I was way too young to be singing along to it... "Flex, time to have sex." That couldn't have been good.

Jurassic 5: chicken food + butt = Feedback

Somehow, I seem to make a complete fool of myself whenever I meet anyone I look up to (i.e. Chali 2Na).

This time it was at Rootdown, when they used to do it at Gabah and J5 had just released What's Golden. Chali 2Na was hangin' out and I totally geeked out. They were pretty big, with "What's Golden" on the radio & in a commercial and everything, and I wanted to talk to him. So I made my way over and started bumbling off something about me doing a college radio show and loving J5's music. He lit up and was like, "Oh, cool." Then I went on to tell him about KUCI's music policy and how they don't want any of the DJs to play mainstream music yada yada yada.

And that's when it all went downhill. He was all like, "Awww man. What? Ahhh... nah man, nah" while shaking his head in disapproval. But here's my thing. I don't really care about all that mainstream vs underground stuff. (But before I digress further, that last statement can be saved for another time called "so 1996.") And so I tried to explain, "But wait, don't go... No hold on. Wait. But I still play J5 on my..." and he was out. Said something about having to meet someone or something. Dang, I felt dumb.

Well anyways, Jurassic 5 has a new album out and it's called Feedback. Thanks to the homie Scheme for reminding about this one.
